Tom and Sally Herter

Tom Herter, 78, passed away July 13, 2026, and his beloved wife, Sally Herter, 75, passed away November 16, 2025. Their family finds comfort in knowing that they shared more than 50 years of marriage and a life filled with family, friendship, and many cherished memories.

Tom was born November 26, 1947, in Springfield, the son of Robert and Margaret Bradley Herter. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Michael Herter.

Tom proudly served in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Captain. During his military service, he served in Korea, Japan, and Wake Island. After his military service, Tom worked for Fiat-Allis until the company closed in 1985. He later worked for the Costa Brothers at Precision Products until his retirement in 2004.

Sally was born December 16, 1949, in Springfield, the daughter of James and Elise Bell Stevens Chesnut. She was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Fitzsimmons, and brother-in-law, Dale Nevins.

Sally worked for the State of Illinois in the Comptroller’s Office for many years.

Tom and Sally were married on November 23, 1974. They made their home in Auburn for many years before moving to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, in December 2004. There, they enjoyed the quiet life together, spending time with family and camping with those they loved. Tom was affectionately known as the “mayor” of their neighborhood in Hot Springs Village. He enjoyed taking walks and playing golf, while Sally loved to read.

They are survived by their son, T.J. (Annelisa) Herter, and their two grandchildren, Sam and Mallory Herter.

Tom is also survived by his siblings, Peggy (Dennis) King and Pat Peters, and sister-in-law, Donna Herter.

Sally is also survived by her sister, Sue Nevins, and brother-in-law, Bob Fitzsimmons.

A joint graveside service celebrating the lives of Tom and Sally Herter will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
