Phyllis Dicks, 90, formerly of Springfield, Illinois, died peacefully on February 5, 2025 at 2:25 pm at Stillwater Senior Living in Edwardsville.
She was born April 23, 1934 in Champaign, the daughter of William and Francis Fisher Fitzgerald.
Her profession as a nurse, working at St. John’s Libertas before retirement, made an impact on her co-workers and patients. Lovingly referred to as “Sarge” at Libertas, Phyllis did not have any trouble speaking her mind or offering her opinion, whether you wanted it or not. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and no family gathering was complete without her playful teasing and laughter. Whether she was gently ribbing them about their outfits or reminiscing about their parents' childhood misadventures in Pawnee, she filled every moment with love, humor, and family pride.
Later in life, Phyllis reluctantly settled in to assisted living and eventually started to enjoy it. She loved playing cards, games and spending time with other residents at Stillwater, laughing and gossiping. Wherever Phyllis went, she brought a little “spice” with her.
Surviving relatives are her daughter, Mary (Rick) Carter of Mesa, Arizona, son Tom (Christy) of Kenosha, Wisconsin and Kurt (Nicole) of Glen Carbon, her daughter in law, Susan Dicks of Pawnee, Illinois, grandchildren Seth, Amanda, Kayla, Jared, Trey, Caitlyn and one great-grand daughter, Chloe. Phyllis was proceeded in death by her husband, Thomas, and son Michael (“Hap”).
Cremation rites were accorded and a private interment will be held at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Bongard, Illinois.
