Matt Kern, 41 of Auburn passed away Monday, December 25, 2023 at his home, surrounded by a room filled with love, family, and friends.
He was born May 22, 1982 in Springfield, the son of Donald and Anita Doglio Kern.
He married the love of his life, Mandi Wells, on July 24, 2004 at Auburn Trinity Lutheran Church. Matt and Mandi had four boys Austin, Talin, Keelin, and Tatin, who he loved beyond measure. Matt spoke of each one of them with pride and pure unconditional love.
Matt received his bachelors in education through Eastern Illinois University and taught in the Chatham and Auburn School Districts. Later in life he took a job with Country Financial. He was a member of the Auburn School Board, an Auburn High School assistant basketball coach, Virden Jr. High track coach, member Knights of Columbus in Virden. Matt loved coaching his children and others in youth sports where he and his teams won several Girard Flag Football Championships. Rumor has it he was being inducted to the Flag Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
Matt was a fan of Auburn High School sports, a true Trojan, with small town pride. He also was an avid Cardinals and Patriots fan.
Surviving are his beautiful wife, Mandi; four amazing boys, Austin Garrison, Talin Kern, Keelin Kern and Tatin Kern; loving parents, Don and Anita Kern; two brothers, Steve (Candice) Kern and Mike (Kristin) Kern; grandmother, Sue Kern; nieces and nephews, Avery, Ashlyn, Jackson, Emilee, Faith, Lanie, Camryn and Mavryk.
Visitation will be from 11am till time of services at 1pm, Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Auburn. Cremation will be accorded following the services.
A gathering to celebrate Matt to follow the services at Edgewood Golf Course.
Memorials may be made to his children’s college fund at UCB.
