L. Deon Butler, 85 of Pawnee passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
He was born August 25, 1940 in Golconda, the son of Willie and Laura Hogg Butler.
Deon married Billie Sue Clements on September 22, 1961 and she preceded him in death on January 14, 2023. Also, preceded in death by a son, Ryan Butler; two brothers, Deneen Butler and Leon Butler.
He worked for the coal mine for most of his life retiring after over 45 years. Deon was a good football and basketball player in high school. He coached his sons baseball teams for many years and left a lasting impression on his boys and their friends. He was a member of Pawnee Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed being with his family and his grandkids spending time outdoors in the woods, hunting and fishing. Deon loved the St. Louis Cardinals and Illini Basketball. He met Lou Brock and he told Deon he was the smartest baseball mind he ever met. He raised champion bird dogs and went to field trails.
Surviving are one son, Tracey Butler; one daughter, Lisa (Jerry) Newquist; six grandchildren, Brandon (Brittany), Lindsie, Matthew, Jordan (Cassie), Remmington and Gauge; two great-grandsons, Charlie and Ozzy; six siblings, Juanita Hall, Charlie Butler, Alieda Gregurich (Bill), Oveda Butler, Carlene Matthews and Arlene (Mike) Nall; several nieces and nephews.
Cremation rites were accorded.
No services will be held per Deon’s request.
