Earl “Wayne” Baker, 90, of Punta Gorda, FL formerly of Pleasant Plains and Auburn, IL passed away on December 16, 2024 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte, FL.
He is survived by four sons, Stephen W. (wife Cindy) Baker of Auburn, IL, Thomas W. (wife Marcia) Baker of Springfield, IL, Douglas A. (wife Carol) Baker of Rotonda West, FL, Mark R. (wife Kate) Baker of Port Charlotte, FL, one daughter, Brenda Towers of Lake Suzy, Fl; 10 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Janice, 2 brothers and 1 sister, parents Ward E. and Virgie M Baker and 2 granddaughters.
Wayne was born in Pleasant Plains, IL. He worked in the Pleasant Plains area for many years as a farm worker, construction worker and owner of Wayne Baker Farm Drainage. In 1978 he was one of the founders of Springfield Plastics in Auburn. He became President of the company until he retired in 1997. He was a leader in the farm drainage industry nationwide and someone who would speak frankly on his views. The company continues today under the principles he stood for.
He was an avid fisherman and truly loved being on the water.
Visitation will be from 9:30am till time of services 11am, Friday, January 10, 2025 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Auburn with Rev. James Palakudy officiating. A graveside services will be held at 2:30pm at Pleasant Plains Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Drain for the Cure – Simmons Cancer Institute.
