Dorothy Green Obituary

Dorothy Green, a long-time resident of Divernon, Il. passed away on October 25, 2021 at the age of 81 years. Dorothy was born in Effingham, Il on December 20, 1939.

In 1976, she began working for the State of Illinois Department of Revenue rising through the ranks over the years to become a Tax Analyst 3 by the time she retired in 2003. This was achieved through Dorothy’s hard work and intelligence, and she was proud of this accomplishment. When the Revenue Department converted to computers in the 1980’s, Dorothy was involved in providing information to help them write the programs, and then she taught the program to other staff members and co-workers. She had many friends at the State, as Dorothy was fun-loving and a caring friend.

She was a voracious reader, mostly of mystery novels, and was well-known at the Pawnee Library. In her later years, when she was having health problems, all she had to do was call the library and ask them to pick out some books for her because they knew what she liked to read.

She also loved to play cards, especially the card game Ups and Downs. She played with dimes, and was always the score-keeper even after she had a stroke and couldn’t write as well. When she traveled to visit family, she always brought her cards and dimes with her so she could play cards with them. Many happy hours were spent around the table talking and laughing and playing cards.

Dorothy loved to travel and was able to go on several trips with her beloved husband, Vernon (Red). She was young at heart, and even though in her later years she had health problems, she never let that stop her. She loved to visit new places as well as visit her family who lived in Michigan and Indiana.

One of her favorite family trips every year was an October visit to her daughter Diane in Michigan to see the fall foliage and pick apples in the orchard. She especially loved the warm cider donuts and apple cider.

Another favorite trip was spending Christmas every year with her daughter Cheri from Indiana and her granddaughter Angela in Illinois. She also never missed her great-grandchildren Amanda and Jacob’s birthday parties in April. She greatly valued the time she had with her family.

Dorothy loved Christmas and was a thoughtful gift-giver. She went shopping with her daughter’s Karen and Sandy every year so they could help her pick out just the right gifts. Everyone in the family looked forward to their gifts from her.

Dorothy married Vernon (Red) Green on March 23, 1991, and he survives her in Divernon. Red and Dorothy had a happy marriage and Red often referred to her as his ‘Queen’. She was much-loved by her family and she will be greatly missed.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents Howard Kruse and Effie Cornelia Mattix, and by her siblings Elaine Swisher, Eugene Kruse, Ray Kruse and Darlene Winter.

Dorothy is survived by her sister Roselyn Jones. She is also survived by her children from a previous marriage, Cheri (Bill) Chernisky, Diane (Adam) Halbrook-White, Ron Halbrook, Karen Halbrook, and Sandy (Kevin) Panting. In addition, Dorothy is survived by eleven grandchildren, Angela (Michael) Bolender, Kristina Halbrook, Lisa (Bryan) Paolucci, Victoria (Shane) Coleman, Kiley (Nick Maton) Halbrook, Cayce (Brittany Eakle) Halbrook, Timothy Halbrook, Kodie Panting, Isabella Panting, Raymi Panting, and Sean Panting. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.

Per CDC and Governor’s mandate masks are required in the building.
