Charles David Busby, 98, of Girard, IL, passed away on September 10, 2025, at his home. He was born September 2, 1927, in Taylorville, IL, the son of Jason and Eva Cook Busby. Nearly 73 years ago, on October 19, 1952, David married Nancy Ann Scott, in Taylorville, and she survives him.
David graduated from Taylorville High School. He served his country in the Merchant Marines and later in the U.S. Army; he was a veteran of World War II, who served in the South Pacific and Japan. Following his military service, David worked for 42 years at area coal mines: Peabody Coal Mine #10 and Monterey Coal Mine. He retired from the State of Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals, where he worked at the Mine Rescue Station. David was a member of the Taylorville VFW and American Legion Post 73.
David was gifted with a natural ear for music and, although he never took lessons, he was able to play anything by ear. Known affectionately as “the piano man,” he shared his love of music as a volunteer at area senior centers and nursing homes where he sang and played the piano to entertain residents. David was honored to receive the Illinois Governor’s Volunteer Service Award as recognition for his many years of volunteer service.
David is survived by his wife Nancy and four children: Scott Busby of Panama City, FL, Sue Ellen Busby of Springfield, IL, Amy Damery of Blue Mound, IL, and Kay Helmerichs of Springfield, IL.; nine grandchildren: Michael Wargo, Cameron Curran, Brent Damery, Jr., Dara Damery, Aaron Damery, Carrie Scott, Billy Scott, Derek Helmerichs, and Claire Ray; and 13 great grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Patty Busby, son-in-law Brent Damery, brother Madison K. Busby, and sisters Mickey Busby Dix and Ann Busby Haywood.
A private family service will be held at a later date at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
