John Alan “Al” “Doc” Lewin, 59, of Springfield, formerly of Auburn and Cullom passed away Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center from complications following a heart attack.

He was born Dec. 13, 1957 in Kankakee, the son of Robert F. “Bud” and Priscilla L. Hardy Lewin.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Norman Kunkle.

He was united in marriage to Donna R. Hillyard on April 12, 1985.

He graduated from Cullom High School in 1976 and he graduated from the U of I firefighting school. 

Al spent his lifetime teaching and training others in the emergency medical field for 40 years.  He was currently employed as the EMS educator at St. John’s Hospital.  He also retired after 32 years of service with the Illinois State Police. 

Al was also formerly employed by Dunn’s Ambulance Service, Auburn Area Ambulance and American Ambulance before accepting this position at St. John’s Hospital. He served on the Cullom and Divernon Fire Departments.

Al was truly dedicated to helping others, whether it was a pep talk or during a medical emergency.  He never met a stranger and made it a daily goal to bring a smile to others.  His dedication to the EMS world brought a wealth of knowledge to those he taught or served with. He saved countless lives and touched just as many others. 

He was a member of the Westside Christian Church.

Surviving are his loving wife, Donna; two daughters, Kimberly (John) Dougherty and Alyssa J. Lewin; three sisters, Patricia “Patty” (Gary) Ferrero, Cindy "C.J." Magee and Lori Kunkle; two brothers, Robert “Bobby” (Yong) Lewin and Larry Lewin; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. till time of funeral services at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017 at Bramley Funeral Home in Auburn with ISP Chaplain Don Pritchard officiating.  Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mona Township Cemetery, Kempton, IL.

Memorials may be made to the Al Lewin Memorial Fund to further EMS education.
