Harry D. Matheny, Sr.

Harry D. Matheny, Sr., 73, of Springfield, formerly of Divernon, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.

He was born May 20, 1943 in Divernon, the son of Ernest at Charlotte Pack Matheny. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother in law, Mary Lee and Bill Patton.

Harry graduated from Divernon High School and MacMurray College where he participated in track and basketball and was later inducted into their sports Hall of Fame. He worked at Fiat Allis for over 20 years and the State of Illinois for 20 years.  During retirement he volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed visiting with friends, going on road trips, working in his yard, and cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals and Illinois basketball.

Surviving are two sons, David (Tammy) Matheny of Carmi and Chris (Margie) Matheny of Overland Park, KS; three grandsons, Clay , Cole, and Ryan; one granddaughter, Carson; two sisters, Louise Matheny of Divernon and Carol Large of Erie; several nieces and nephews.

Cremation rites were accorded.

Graveside services will be Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Cumberland Sugar Creek Cemetery in Glenarm with Rev. Jim Hibbett officiating.

Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels or American Cancer Society.
