Ann Squires Akers passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Memorial Heritage Health.
She was born December 1, 1921, in Divernon, Illinois, the daughter of Charles and Margaret Jane Squires.
During WWII, she met her future husband and love of her life, 1st Lt. John Akers, Jr., of Greenville, Texas, while he was stationed in Illinois prior to serving in the European theatre as a bomber pilot. She married John upon his return from the war, on October 27, 1945 in Springfield. They were married for 72 years, until his passing last fall.
Ann had a wonderful, outgoing and gregarious personality and was blessed with many good friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Akers, Jr. and her eldest son, John Charles Akers.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield. She was also a long time member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter DC, of Springfield.
Surviving are two sons, Robert D. Akers, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Jeffrey A. Akers, of Denver, Colorado; four grandchildren, Justin A. Akers of Vienna, Virginia, Erin Elizabeth Drucker of Herndon, Virginia, John J. Akers of San Francisco, California, and Oliver A. Akers of Denver, Colorado; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church in Springfield, with a reception to follow at the church.
Private graveside services were held at Brush Creek Cemetery in Divernon, IL.
