Benny Bryant “Lucky” Thompson, 90, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2019 at his home in Girard.
Lucky was born March 27, 1929, the son of Willie and Velda Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Freeman and Junior Thompson; three sisters, Ella Buehl, Loretta “Reddy” Johnson and Delores “Toody” Oller; and great-grandson Beau Bryant Connolly.
Lucky was a graduate of Pleasant Plains High School and served in the United States Army. Lucky was a lifelong farmer who was incredibly proud of his farm which he had named “Smiling Hilltop” after his favorite childhood book. He greatly enjoyed buying, selling and trading and never missed an auction. Lucky was particularly fond of antique cars and farm equipment. While he didn’t usually travel too far from home, Lucky liked attending local state and county fairs. He also enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball, New England Patriots football and Illini basketball. Lucky loved all animals, especially his dog Bobo.
Lucky is survived by his wife of 68 years, Zella Maxine Thompson; daughter Elysia “Lisa” Britz; brother Curt Thompson; grandchildren, Tom Connolly, Tammy (Marty) Bryant and Bobbie (Nick O’Dea) Britz; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday August 29, 2019 at Brush Creek Cemetery in Divernon. A luncheon will follow at the Divernon American Legion hall located at 249 S. 2nd St.
