Alvin "Shorty" J. Brewer

Alvin J. “Shorty” Brewer, 91, of Riverton, formerly of Divernon, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at St. John’s Hospital.

He was born August 27, 1925 in Chatham the son of Calvin and Helen Blakley Brewer.

He married Goldie Knight and she preceded him in death. He later married Mary Jane Edwards and she survives. Preceded in death by a son, Donald; two sisters, Mary and Fannie; and four brothers, Bill, Glen, Al Lee, and John.

Shorty served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from the State of Illinois in 1987.

Surviving are his wife Mary Jane; two sons, Alvin (Donna) Brewer and James (Betty) Brewer; one daughter, Carolyn (Ron) Kohlrus; two step-sons, Roger (Barb) Large and Lyndall (Debbie) Large; one step-daughter Crystal (Brad) Mayer; thirteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; two brothers, Sam (Ann) and Howard; one sister, Alta Barlow; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. till time of service at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Bramley Funeral Home in Divernon with Rev. Dick Piscatelli officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, December 5, 2016 at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
